hi glenn,no more track remains in the tunnel, and it is gated off from the general public, however,i think it is now used by the national grid to carry electric cables under the woodhead pass. The original twin bores definately do and have a narrow gauge track running thru them with their own little loco's.type in woodhead route on google, there is some good info to be found, have fun searching!

There have been a couple of proposals to re-open the line in the last 10 years. One involved using it as a freight route for traffic to the Channel Tunnel. The other, which involved re-opening it to passengers, was included in Arriva's bid for the Trans Pennine Express franchise.

Hi, The lining on the old double track tunnel was found to be too thin and needed strengthening, so BR dug a single line tunnel next to it. Your image is of that single line tunnel :-)

I paid another visit to the area, with my camera, during Summer 1999. This is - or rather was - Torside crossing, looking towards Hadfield. It's really hard to believe there was a railway there at all!

the woodhead route was heritage it should have been saved not closed and there should be a preserved line where the 1500v dc locos can run once more:):):)

I discovered this when passing through the area on my way to a holiday in Scotland in 1998. I couldn't stop to take a photo of it, but when I came up the following year I made a point of stopping off to get an image. It's visible from the minor road on the way out of Dunford Bridge, but is some way off it on private land. Note: the photo was taken with the land owner's permission.

It's visible from the minor road between Dunford Bridge and the A628, but requires you to access private land to view it in close up. Whether it's still there or not is something I don't know - I haven't been through the area since. I don't actually know how long it had been there before I took the image, but I don't recall having seen it during my photographic trips along the route in 1986.

It's suprising how this has changed even more today. It was much better with trains going over it. I live on the road it crosses.

The watermark is there for a reason - to prevent unauthorised use of the images - and no amount of abuse from you is going to change that. If you find the watermarking *that* intolerable, I suggest you don't look at my images! Any further comments you leave on this site will be deleted.

The guard would be loacted in the REAR cab of the eight car train on SURFACE Stock. The guard would only be loacted in passenger saloons on TUBE Stock trains.

You're correct with regard to the C and D stocks. The Guard did control the doors from the rear cab - making conversion to OPO that bit easier. But the Guard's panels were located next to the single leaf doors in the passenger saloons of the DM vehicles in the A stock. Indeed after the A stock was converted for OPO use - but before it was refurbished - Drivers still operated the Guard's position switch in the passenger saloon, even though the door controls were located in the cab by that time.
